Resources - Zoom Search Engine Tutorials - Configuration

The configuration panel of Zoom has a wealth of features that are used to tailor your search results and how your search performs. Here I will cover some of the options available through the configuration panel.

Zoom search engine - the configuration panel

Please click below for a brief overview of the options available within the configuration panel:

General

General settings - here you can set whether or not the wizard appears on launching Zoom and you can also set a beep once indexing is complete.

Spider downloading options - The options here allow you to control how Zoom indexes the website. Selecting 'Single-thread' downloading is the slower option, but means that you can analyse which pages are being indexed. 'Multiple threads' is the fastest option, the default value is 2 threads. Having this option selected means that Zoom is able to download files and index at the same time. 'Reload all files' means that the cached files aren't used, insuring that all new content is indexed.

Spider throttling - this should only be used when you are indexing a severely over burdened web server.

Search Page

Search form appearance - here you can modify how the search box appears on the search page. The 'Advanced' setting is the default option which allows users to select how many results are shown per page and also if they want to match any search words or all of the search words. The 'basic' setting allows the user to submit a search on their entered keyword or phrase. The 'Do not generate' option should only be used if you are entering your search box in another area of your page such as the side bar as shown on this website, the search results page will then not generate a form for the user to enter search phrases or keywords. In most cases it is best to keep the default 'Advanced' option set as this allows the user more flexibility.

Miscellaneous -

Results linking - specifies where the search results will open when clicked on. The default is 'current window', a frame can also be specified or a new browser window.
